National Geographic is famous for beautiful photography and they have a huge wallpaper section where you can download beautiful wallpapers for free. Wallpapers are categorized under 10 categories (Adventure & Exploration, Nature & Weather, Underwater, History, Landscapes, etc). Unfortunately, the bad thing is that images are available only a maximum of 1280 pixels wide.

Gimp is an image editor. It is very powerful software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything.
Gimp is not native Windows software. It is a port of very popular Linux image editor, so user interface may be very confusing at the beginning. It may take some time to learn to use it. But software is still full of features Older like channels, layers and masks, filters and effects, tabbed palettes, editable text tools, perspective clone, improved printing, and color operations such as levels.
This software is freeware so it is probably the best free image edit application available and it can be a great replacement for Windows Paint.
